The Density Meter Trusted by Customs and Border Protection Agents

The Density Meter Trusted by Customs and Border Protection Agents

The Buster K910B Density Meter from Campbell/Harris Security Equipment Company (CSECO) is considered the “gold standard” in density meters and contraband detecting tools. Since 1984 the Buster has been in use by law enforcement agencies all over the country, with its biggest patrons being the agents of the US Customs and Border Protection (CBP).

A number of CBP agents were actually involved in the Buster’s development. Back in 1984, CSECO founder Patrick J. Campbell was approached by the federal government. They asked him to design and develop a tool that would enable them to accurately detect the presence of hidden contraband. Campbell agreed but had one condition: he wanted to work closely with the end-users, the CBP agents who would use the product each day. Campbell was given permission to work with the CBP agents and together they developed what would be the most sophisticated contraband detection tool, the Buster K910B Density Meter.

The Buster uses the latest in technology. Its low-intensity gamma radiation emitter and scintillation detector allows the CBP agents to scan through a variety of materials such as wood, metal, reinforced plastic, as well as glass, soil, liquid, paper and carton. This very technology also allows the user to scan and detect hidden contraband in a matter of minutes. Usually, it takes about five minutes or less to scan a vehicle and about 10 minutes or less to scan an average-sized room.

Other contraband detection tools that use microwave, millimeter wave, radio wave and ultraviolet wave are limited not only in the materials they can scan through, but also the accuracy of their results.

Since the CBP agents were instrumental in the creation of the Buster, naturally it is the tool of choice against smuggling and drug trafficking. From the Buster’s introduction, there have been thousands of the units manufactured, and many are currently in use by the CBP. Each day, these hardworking agents patrol the major US borders and use the Buster along with CSECO’s other tools to combat the influx of narcotics and other contraband into the country.

There is no specific comparison of Buster’s in use by the CBP agents with other brands of contraband detecting tools. However, the Buster is in use more frequently in these southern states in the US — California, Texas, Arizona, and Florida. These states share a border with Mexico, and that border has been a hot spot for smuggling. The CBP’s mobile unit, the United States Border Patrol, has the responsibility of securing all major checkpoints in the country in their bid to prevent contraband from entering the country.

These agents work diligently to make sure that major all borders are kept secure and protected. They need a tool to help them accurately detect the presence of hidden contraband transported by smugglers. Since they began using the Buster, the CBP has seen a remarkable increase in the number of seizures of contraband. The CBP has amassed millions of dollars worth of smuggled marijuana, cocaine, heroin, hashish, and other illegal drugs as well as cash, weapons, and explosives, in their daily operations.

The success of the Buster K910B Density Meter is a testament to its efficiency. And what’s more, the Customs and Border Protection agents were involved in the creation of this wonderful detection tool that has served remarkably well for over three decades.
