CBP Agents use CSECO Buster to Intercept Cocaine at El Paso Port

Each day the U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents around the country use the Buster K910B Density Meter and other contraband detection equipment to fight the influx of illegal drugs into the country. On March 26, El Paso Port CBP agents seized nearly 13 pounds of cocaine. Estimates list the street value of these drugs at over $406,000.

Beverly Good, the CBP El Paso Port Director, said “Stopping almost 13 pounds of cocaine is a significant enforcement action.”

CBP agents conduct enforcement sweeps of vehicles that are waiting to enter the United States at various locations around the country. During these sweeps, the agents will often have a variety of tools at their disposal. K-9 units are used and they are often the first to indicate the presence of hidden contraband. At this particular time, however, a CBP officer noticed an abnormality in the vehicle’s interior. Since he had a Campbell/Harris Security Equipment Company (CSECO) Buster K910B Density Meter available, he scanned the back seat where he noticed the abnormality. The reading he received was very high. This often indicates hidden contraband is present.

“Bert,” a drug sniffing dog, was next to search the vehicle. He also alerted to the presence of something in the rear seat. The officers then followed these indications with an x-ray screening which spotted the anomaly in the back seat. The Border Patrol agents and CBP officers further examined the vehicle, a Dodge Neon, and located five packages filled with cocaine that were hidden in the rear seat of the vehicle.

The CBP officers arrested the driver, a resident of Canutillo, Texas, and turned him over to the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Homeland Security Investigations agents. He will face charges related to an attempted smuggling.

CSECO understands how important it is to keep illegal drugs and other contraband off the streets. With this important task comes the need for tools that will make it easier for CBP agents, as well as local, state, and federal law enforcement, to locate and stop the flow of illegal drugs, weapons, and other items from reaching their intended recipient.

Since 1984, CSECO has manufactured the Buster K910B Density Meter, considered by law enforcement agents around the US to be the “gold standard” for detecting contraband. The Buster, when used in conjunction with drug sniffing dogs and other tools, increases the likelihood of locating and being able to seize the contraband. This ensures our towns and cities are safer for its citizens to live in them.
