When law enforcement officers suspect someone they have stopped is transporting contraband, they need to turn equipment they can trust to either confirm or deny their suspicions. The Buster K910B Density Meter is often the tool of choice law enforcement agencies. In fact, law enforcement agencies in the United States and around the world consider the Buster to be the “gold standard” when it comes to contraband detection.
Patrick J. Campbell, who has over 35 years experience designing and manufacturing equipment that uses radioactive elements and can be used by “non-technical personnel,” approached the federal government to help them develop a tool that would search for hidden contraband. Although the original intent was to search mainly for cash and narcotics, Campbell felt he could develop a solid tool if he was able to work directly with the end user – US Customs and Border Patrol agents who are on the front line of the war on drugs. Together, Campbell and the US Customs and Border Patrol agents, designed the Buster density meter.
Manufactured by Campbell/Harris Security Equipment Company, the Buster K910B Density Meter is unlike other contraband detection equipment on the market. It was developed to use a low intensity gamma radiation emitter along with a scintillation detector. This allows the Buster to quickly scan for hidden contraband and provides a result within minutes, depending upon the size of the area being scanned. Vehicles can usually be scanned in less than 5 minutes and average rooms can be scanned in less than 10 minutes.
Other contraband detection meters on the market, especially those using millimeter wave, radio wave, ultra-violet or microwave technologies, are considered inferior by some law enforcement officers because they have limitations that require the officers to carry more than one meter to get the job done. The Buster, on the other hand, is able to scan through wood, metal and reinforced plastic. It is able to identify items which have been concealed without damaging the items being inspected.
Local, state, national and international law enforcement agencies have used the Buster to effectively detect contraband in such objects as hidden compartments, fuel tanks, car doors, tires, containers and more in vehicles such as cars, trucks, airplanes, boats and shipping containers.
Another benefit of the Buster contraband detection density meter is that it offers both visual and audible readouts. These allow the user to locate concealed drugs, weapons, explosives and cash. When the optional telescoping pole is attached, the “Buster-on-a-Stick” offers law enforcement the ability to inspect areas that previously were not able to be scanned. Along with an audible alarm that sounds when contraband is found, it also has a liquid crystal display (LCD) reader that provides clear indication that contraband is present or not.
The Buster also comes equipped with the “Rad-Aware” radiation detection technology. This allows first responders to quickly determine if anything radioactive is in the area, whether this is a dirty-bomb detonation or other radioactive release. First responders who use the Buster with “Rad-Aware” technology are able to determine a safe perimeter and keep themselves and others out of harm’s way.
